On March 19, 1789, Colonel José Joaquín Veroes was born in San Felipe, Yaracuy, a prominent soldier during the independence of Venezuela.

He was the son of a slave from Curaçao, however, under the care of the Major Justice, he was able to study at the Elementary School for Dominican Fathers.

His military life began in 1810, and he was recognized for his great performance in the Battle of Pedregal, Sabaneta de Carapa, Cañizos, San Antonio and Chivacoa. His fighting spirit defeated Domingo de Monteverde's gut during the War to the Death.

In 1814, he became a lieutenant, a degree that had never been granted to a Zambo soldier, but his performance and loyalty earned him the promotion.

He died on January 8, 1855 at the age of 66. His remains were transferred to the National Pantheon on December 16, 1942.
