On September 23, 1850, José Gervasio Artigas, a military, revolutionary and independence leader, died, who, with his ideals and the strength of his sword, forged the independence of Uruguay.

Artigas was born on June 19, 1764 in Montevideo. For much of his life he dedicated himself to rural work, generating great ties with the Gaucho people, as well as extensive knowledge of the geography of his country.

He began his military career in the armed militia authorized by the Spanish crown to defend Montevideo from the Portuguese advance on the border with Brazil.

Later, after the May Revolution was declared, Artigas offered his services to the Revolutionary Junta to fight against the Spanish government of Montevideo, winning numerous battles and promoting the organization of the Republic.

Honored with the title of Protector of Free Peoples, he dictated the first distribution measures taken on the continent to redistribute the lots of estates taken from emigrant realists to zambos, free blacks, Indians, poor whites and widows. He proposed the first agrarian reform and other social justice actions, which clashed with the thinking of the elites of the time.

He was entitled as: Chief of the Orientals and Protector of Free Peoples. He died in Paraguay on September 23, 1850, and the Uruguayan government declared him: Founder of Oriental Nationality posthumously in 1856.

174 years after planting this hero of our America, peoples raise their flags of struggle to combat imperialism and its lackeys, who seek to destroy and subjugate these lands that forge giants of freedom.
