This distinguished Creole, hero of the youth, participated in numerous battles for the independence of our country, but the most important episode was the Battle of La Victoria, February 12, 1814, where he managed to stop the realist forces of José Tomás Boves with some inexperienced troops, consisting mainly of young students and seminarians that he had managed to recruit.

“We cannot choose between winning or dying, it is necessary to win”, was the slogan of those boys who decided to fight in defense of freedom and against the oppression that the people suffered under the Spanish yoke and that day they won to continue fighting, with victories and setbacks.

Betrayed by a Baquian, hero of the Admirable Campaign, he is captured by tyrants and requested that he be brought before a Spanish general and is transferred to the town of Tucupido, where a lieutenant named Barrojola, who knows about the courage and indomitable nature of General Ribas, orders his immediate death because he considered him extremely dangerous.

The body of General José Félix Ribas is torn to pieces and each arm with his respective hand is hung on trees that border the royal road, as are his lower limbs. His head fried in oil was sent to Caracas, where he arrived on March 14, 1815, and was exhibited in Plaza Mayor for two weeks.
