The executive secretary of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples
of Our America-Peoples' Trade Agreement (ALBA-TCP), Jorge
Arreaza, on behalf of the regional bloc, supported all decolonization and deneocolonization processes in the world.
From the Venezuela Hall, in the
Military Circle, in Caracas, where the Caribbean
Regional Seminar of the United Nations (UN) Special Policy and Decolonization Committee was held,
Arreaza reiterated the anti-imperialist and anti-colonialist nature of the Bolivarian
Alliance, while advocating that Puerto Rico can exercise its rights as a free and sovereign State.
“The decolonization of Puerto Rico has always been a
common and historic cause in the Latin American and Caribbean region (...) we have at one
end Cuba a completely sovereign country that exercises its rights and on the
other side Puerto Rico, a country that is denied the exercise of its rights,” said the Secretary.
In that regard, he described
the colonization of the “Island of Encanto” as unacceptable and denounced that the United States exercises
arms control over the Puerto Rican people, thus preventing their development.
“It's scandalous that Puerto Rico doesn't even have the autonomy to make its
own timely decisions.”
“From ALBA-TCP, we once again confirm our support and solidarity with the people of Puerto Rico, and we look forward to the day when Puerto Rico finally sits at this table as one more free and sovereign State in Our America.”
