The Japanese authorities issued this Tuesday, April 2, at night, a tsunami alert for the coastal area of the southern prefecture of Okinawa, following the occurrence of an earthquake very close to the Chinese island of Taiwan, according to the Telesur website.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) predicted a tsunami with waves of up to three meters due to the earthquake, which occurred at 08H58 (local time) on Wednesday.
According to the JMA, a 0.3-meter tsunami was observed on Yonaguni Island around 09:18 (local time), which also reached Ishigaki and Miyako Islands. The agency suggested that those who reside on the islands of Okinawa, Miyakojima, Yaeyama and the surrounding areas should evacuate immediately.
“The tsunami waves are closing in on the shorelines. Evacuate as quickly as possible. Waves can hit repeatedly. Continue to evacuate until all warnings are lifted,” the meteorological agency urged.
According to data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the depth of the earthquake was 11.4 kilometers.
In addition, this body had set the magnitude of the earthquake in a preliminary way at 7.5, which was then rectified to 7.4.
