January 30, 1818: First meeting between the Liberator and General Páez

On January 30, 1818, the Liberator Simon Bolivar and José Antonio Páez met for the first time, in the Cañafistola Hato, near San Juan de Payara, in the current state of Apure. Both warlords knew each other by letters, but had not met in person.

Faced with the need to unify the armies, Bolívar moved to the plains in search of Páez, who was the undisputed leader of the Llaneros and the winner of many fights against the Spanish army.

After six days in the presence of the Libertador, Páez, accompanied by fifty of his best lancers, would perform the feat known as Toma de las Flecheras, on the Apure River, on the outskirts of San Fernando.
