The town of Isnotú, in the state of Trujillo, commemorated the first anniversary of the canonization of Dr. José Gregorio Hernández and Mother Carmen Rendiles with a solemn mass at the Child Jesus Sanctuary of Isnotú.
The solemn Eucharist was led by Monsignor José Trinidad Fernández Angulo, bishop of the Diocese of Trujillo, who prayed for peace, health and unity of the country and in thanksgiving for the favors granted.
The festivities in the hometown of the “doctor of the poor” began on October 1 with healing concerts, the traditional lowering of the image and an extensive cultural and religious program that includes pilgrimages and special eucharists.
The historic proclamation of the first Venezuelan saints united millions of believers in prayers of gratitude and celebrations that reaffirmed the presence of both figures in the nation's spiritual identity.
As part of this commemoration, the parishioners took to the streets to renew their promises of faith and devotion, reaffirming the legacy of love, charity and hope of Saint Joseph Gregorio Hernández and Saint Carmen Rendiles.
San José Gregorio Hernández is a symbol of charity and faith in Venezuela. Born in Isnotú, Trujillo state, in 1864, he focused his medical career and intellect on selfless care for the most vulnerable sectors, earning him the title of “the doctor of the poor”.
Known affectionately in his homeland as “Goyo” “Goyito” or “mano Goyo”, his figure constitutes a refuge of faith in times of difficulty and illness, being present in homes and health centers as a testimony of compassion.
Its elevation to the altars transcended the recognition of the universal Catholic Church, ratifying a veneration that the Venezuelan people cultivated for generations. Seeing such a close figure inscribed in the Book of Saints represents a source of pride that enhances the nation's identity.
