This Wednesday, the Prime Minister of Ireland, Leo Varadkar, announced his resignation as head of the Executive while noting that he will also abandon the leadership of the conservative and Christian Democrat Fine Gael party.
The 45-year-old politician said during a meeting with the media: “I resign today as leader of Fine Gael and will leave the position of Taoiseach as soon as there is a successor.”
Varadkar expressed pride in having advanced policies to make the European country “more egalitarian and more modern”.
The decision was announced two weeks after referendums to modernize the concept of family and the role of women in society were rejected.
