The International Energy Agency (IEA) warned that the European Union (EU) could close the winter season with its gas reserves at the lowest level in its history, leaving the community block with extremely limited room for maneuver in the face of possible disturbances in the global energy market.
As reported by the international media outlet Telesur, the block's inventories began the campaign at their lowest share since 2013, and it is estimated that storage could fall below 10% of its operational capacity by the end of March 2027 under scenarios of severe weather and interruptions in global supply.
In this regard, the multilateral organization's analyses detailed the risk factors, stating: “The bloc is starting winter with reserves at a minimum since 2013 and the IEA expects storage to fall below 10% of its capacity by the end of March 2027 with severe weather and interruptions in Ormuz.”
The report also warns that this situation will force an intensification of injection and replacement rates during the following summer, which will considerably increase price volatility and financial pressure on European consumers in the coming seasons.
