On November 29, 1977, the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) requested that this date be celebrated annually as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People in accordance with Resolution 32/40 B. This initiative came as a commemoration of the date when, in 1947, the same General Assembly adopted resolution 181 (II), later known as the partition resolution, which stipulated the creation of a Jewish State and an Arab State in Palestine. Of the States provided for in that resolution, so far only one has been created: Israel.
This day is not only celebrated because the UN reminds us that Palestine refugees are experiencing more than six decades of astonishing resistance, lives full of suffering and longing, and biased dreams. It is also celebrated to provide the international community with an opportunity to focus its attention on the fact that the question of Palestine has not yet been resolved and that Palestinians cannot yet exercise the inalienable rights recognized by the General Assembly, namely: the right to self-determination without external interference, the right to national independence and sovereignty, and the right to return to their homes, from where they were displaced, and to have their property restored.
Today, on the International Day of Solidarity with Palestine, from Venezuela we express our brotherhood with the cause of this people, we advocate for a Palestinian State with full rights in the international community and we demand the immediate cessation of the genocide being promoted by the Israeli government against the heroic Palestinian people.
