The Standing Committee on Indigenous Peoples of the National Assembly (AN) proposed an agreement to commemorate the International Day of Tolerance, celebrated on November 16 since it was declared by the United Nations (UN) in 1995. The president of the commission, Deputy Nicia Maldonado, highlighted the relevance of this issue in the current global situation.
The agreement seeks to guarantee the human rights of naturally diverse people, such as the 44 indigenous peoples of Venezuela, which allows for harmonious coexistence based on tolerance. Maldonado affirmed that tolerance is an essential means in social relations, which helps to rule out violence and coercion, thus promoting world peace.
Deputy Maldonado emphasized that the purpose of the agreement is to raise public awareness through awareness-raising programs that promote the meaning of tolerance and respect for the beliefs, cultures and opinions of others. He pointed out that, at a time when fascism threatens humanity, the sovereignty of nations, democracy and the freedom of peoples, this issue takes on special importance.
The subcommittee on Legislation, Participation, Guarantees, Duties and Rights of Afro-Descendants, chaired by Deputy Leonardo Chirinos (AC/Delta Amacuro), must promote actions to prevent intolerance, discrimination and violence, with a special emphasis on indigenous and Afro-descendant communities.
In addition, Maldonado reported on the national deployment carried out by the deputies for the Public Consultation of the Laws of Popular Power 2021-2025, a day of dialogue with the people that seeks to involve citizens in the drafting and discussion of these laws to strengthen participatory and leading democracy in Venezuela.
