Every September 11, the day of the Virgin of Coromoto, Patron Saint of Venezuela, is celebrated in commemoration of her second appearance to the Indian Coromoto in 1652, at which time she handed her a piece of tree bark with her image.

According to history, the original peoples who inhabited what is now the Portuguese state in the 17th century were not very comfortable with the Spaniards who at the point of the sword sought to subdue them and instill in them a religion they did not know, so they preferred to flee to the mountains, Yvke Mundial reported.

One day, in the middle of the year 1652, the Coromoto Indian, Chief of the Cospes Indians, and his wife were walking through the jungle, when they arrived at a ravine they were surprised by the presence of a very beautiful lady who was walking on water, who smiled at them with a serene and loving face, so she spoke to them in her own language and asked them to be baptized both they and her tribe.

Everyone came to the city to be baptized, however, the Cacique, rebellious because of the behavior of some Spaniards, refused to do so and fled with some indigenous people to the jungle.

While in his hut, accompanied by his wife and sister-in-law Isabel, the Virgin appeared, radiating a light so bright that it illuminated the whole place. The Cacique was very upset and wanted the lady to leave, but she came up and hugged him, so he tried to grab her to expel her from his house, but she faded away and Coromoto stood still, speechless, with his hand closed. When he opened it he found in his hand a small image of the Virgin a piece of tree bark.

The date of this second apparition is the one officially taken by the Catholic Church for the adoration of the Virgin of Coromoto, who, in October 1944, Pope Pius XII, declared her as the Celestial and Principal Patron of Venezuela.

Pope John Paul II, on his second visit to Venezuela 1996, expressed his joy at returning to the “land of grace” and inaugurated in Guanare, the Spiritual Capital of Venezuela, the National Shrine of Our Lady of Coromoto.
