This Friday, November 29, the Minister of Popular Power for Culture, Ernesto Villegas, formalized before the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) the delivery of the document for the nomination of the Venezuelan arepa as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
During the delivery of the file, Villegas highlighted that the file was prepared by the Center for Cultural Diversity in conjunction with all the Venezuelan communities.
“If there is one thing that identifies, that unites Venezuelans, it is their arepa. It is an element that has transcended all the arts, it is part of our collective imagination, it is also an element that evokes family love, the loving relationship between children and their mothers is shaped like an arepa,” he said.
He also thanked the Center for Cultural Diversity, the National Institute of Nutrition and the Ministry of People's Power for Food for all their contributions to the preparation of the file.
He reaffirmed that just as Arepa is coming to UNESCO, so will Casabe, since “they are two fundamental foods of our gastronomic and cultural identity,” he added.
“Both the Casabe and the Arepa in their original versions were great cakes for collective food. Each of the members of the families takes a piece and smears it with some protein food and from there to the mouth,” he said.
Villegas pointed out that the initiative to nominate Venezuelan arepa as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity has absolutely nothing to do with commercial brands. “Surely some of them are going to try to take advantage,” he said.
In addition, he reaffirmed that these actions comply with the instructions of President Nicolás Maduro at vertex number 7 of the Great Viva Venezuela Mission, in which it was proposed to deliver two new files: El Tamunangue and La Arepa.
