Miguel Ángel Sáenz Varela, one of the historic leaders of the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMNL), in El Salvador, died this Saturday morning, according to family members, as well as the vice-president of the Central American nation, Félix Ulloa.

“Our colleague Miguel Sáenz Varela left us. The country loses an impeccable man who fought all his life for the redemption of the oppressed. And I lose a great partner and brother. Until victory always, Miguel”, Lorena Peña, a member of the FMLN, through her account on the social network X.

At just 13 years old, Sáenz Varela joined a solidarity committee with a strike at the University of El Salvador and was arrested, events that marked his connection with political activities.

Later he was part of the Revolutionary Front of Medical Students, in the aforementioned center of higher studies and began in the Salvadoran Communist Party.

Once in the ranks of the FMLN, he was a member of the Political Diplomatic Commission beginning in 1984, responsible for negotiating and recognizing the guerrilla group around the world.

In 1989, during the offensive that the Front launched against the capital and military sites elsewhere, it was tasked with logistical tasks and communications with the various fronts.

After the civil war ended, with the FMLN becoming a political party, he was a member of the Legislative Assembly in the department of San Salvador for two terms: 1994-1997 and 1997-2000. Between 1994 and 2000 he was a national deputy.

He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Salvadoran Institute for Municipal Development (ISDEM) and was its director between July 2009 and July 2015.

In addition to training as a doctor, Sáenz Varela had training in local development and municipalities, and headed the National Secretariat of Municipalism of the FMLN.
