On Tuesday the 35th anniversary of the rebellion known as El Caracazo, the president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, praised the strength of the people that rose on February 27, 1989 against the neoliberal measures of Carlos Andrés Pérez (CAP) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Through his account on the social network X, the head of state recalled that El Caracazo was “an unprecedented popular rebellion, led by the brave Venezuelan people who rose up in their thousands in protest against the false democracy that had plunged them into misery and despair.”

This surprising rebellion began on the morning of February 27, 1989, in the city of Guarenas, where a group of inhabitants demonstrated against the increase in traffic resulting from the so-called “adjustment” in the price of fuel decreed by CAP as part of the measures to cut spending through the elimination of subsidies in the case of food, beverages and public services. This protest quickly spread to Caracas.
