He made history! Luis Torrens won the award for the MLB Play of the Week

Venezuelan Luis Torrens became the first mask to be recognized as the Play of the Week in Major League Baseball (MLB), since the award was created in 2019, in the form of MLB Network, on Monday afternoon.

Overall, it's the eighth award of its kind for a member of the Mets and his second of the season, after Puerto Rican Francisco Lindor won it on May 6. While no Venezuelan had raised it in 2024.

With one out on the scoreboard, full bases and a tie run in the third, during the final game of the London Series, against the Philadelphia Phillies, Nick Castellanos hit a bruise at bat in front of the plate, Torrens reacted and fielded the ball, ran and threw the starting one, out of balance, so that Pete Alonso would stretch and complete a lightning double play, which ended the game, with a win for New York 6-5, LVBP reported.

To choose the winner of the Play of the Week, the theft of a home run by Michael Toglia (Colorado); an out of Elly De La Cruz (Cincinnati) with a backhand glove; a save by Andrés Giménez (Cleveland) before a roll to right field and the subsequent out; in addition to the head play of Blaze Alexander (Arizona) and his quick starting shot, MLB.com reported.
