Gustavo Pereira, a literary critic, recognized as one of the most important Venezuelan poets in Venezuelan and Latin American literary history, was born in Punta de Piedras, Margarita Island, on March 7, 1940.
He was part of the 1999 Constituent Assembly and drafted the preamble to the current Magna Carta. He insisted that thanks to the Constitution of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, the invisible ones, as always, managed to be made visible.
He studied at the University of Paris, and founded the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Center for Socio-Humanistic Research at the University of the Orient.
Among the awards received: the Municipal Poetry Prize of Caracas (1988), the Fundarte Poetry Prize (1993), the Prize of the XII José Antonio Ramos Sucre Literary Biennial (1997) and the National Prize for Literature of Venezuela (2001). In 2008, the 5th edition of the World Poes Festival was held in honor of Gustavo Pereira.
