On November 3, 1591, the Portuguese captain Juan Fernández de León founded the current city of Guanare, with the name of the Holy Spirit of the Guanaguanare Valley, consecrated as the capital of the Portuguese state.

It is also known as the “Athens of the plain”, because it houses cultural centers in general and “the spiritual capital of Venezuela” because it has in it the great Basilica of Our Lady of Coromoto, patron saint of our country.

The city of Guanare also stands out for being the one that received the Liberator Simon Bolivar in the year of 1803, within the framework of the Admirable Campaign.

It is also one of the few cities in the American continent that has the certificate of its foundation, an original document that is kept in the General Archive of the Indies, in Seville.

On the other hand, in the largest city in the Portuguese state, local and world tourists enjoy the attraction of the typical Venezuelan plains because of their friendly people, delicious meat on sticks and fresh cheeses make Guanare an ideal destination to visit.
