This Tuesday, Greenland is holding local legislative elections, the results could mark a milestone in the independence of the island rich in hydrocarbons and minerals essential for the energy transition amid pressure from the President of the United States (USA), Donald Trump to take possession of the country.

The electoral debates on the island with 57,000 inhabitants go beyond independence, focusing on issues such as: health, education and the relationship with Denmark, which retains the diplomatic, military or monetary powers of the Arctic island.

Likewise, the press has detailed that the main opposition formation, the nationalists of Naleraq, wants independence; but the members of the outgoing local government coalition, the environmental left Inuit Ataqatigiit (IA) known as the “Inuit Community”, and the social democrats of Siumut, condition it to economic progress.

The elections are taking place in a context of concern on the part of Greenlanders after Trump's threats to take control of their country, even by force, because he affirms that the US needs it “for national security”.
