Faced with the repeated violent events that took place in the north of Santander, the governor of the state, Freddy Bernal, specified that the “challenge is to keep Táchira as a zone of peace, and to the businessmen, merchants, the people of Tachirense that as long as I am governor there will be peace, and if an event happens I will face the Constitution in hand, taking care of human rights”.
He said that in Táchira “we have been defenders of human rights, but confronting criminals with a heavy hand wherever they come from, whatever ideology they may have, but in Táchira we are going to allow the violence of the north of Santander to pass to a state where we have lived total and absolute tranquility for more than five years”.
He also said that “we are deeply concerned about the regrettable situation that Colombia is experiencing and in particular the north of Santander. These are years of confrontations, attacks and assassinations, and of course we raise hope that Colombia will achieve a path to peace.”
He expressed words of solidarity with his counterpart from Norte de Santander, William Villamizar and the mayor of Cúcuta, Jorge Acevedo, listing the regrettable violent events that have shaken the Colombian department, which imply “that violence broke out again in Norte de Santander and especially in Cúcuta.”
He emphasized that in Táchira there is total peace “on a permanent basis I have had meetings with the commander of the REDI, ZODI, CONAS, GOES, SEBIN, DIGCIM, Táchira Police to continue maintaining the security cordon that we have had for several years and intelligence agencies have been fine-tuned in recent months to know how such a permeable border moves.”
