The Brazilian Industrial Development Agency (ABDI) plans to stop using WhatsApp for its communications and will open a tender to choose a national company that offers an alternative messaging platform, the Russian Today portal reported.

The announcement was made by the president of ABDI, Ricardo Cappelli, in statements to the Folha de S. Paulo newspaper.

This decision is intended to improve security and prevent information leaks in the face of frequent leaks of conversations through foreign applications.

In Cappelli's view, large platforms should not be a governmental or official data exchange channel.

Cappelli, who was executive secretary of the Ministry of Justice in 2023, affirms that, at that time, there were already plans to implement a similar measure. However, there was talk of their own platform for the Police.

Initially, the local newspaper had released the news with a headline warning that the ADBI intended to “ban” the use of WhatsApp in Brazil. After that, Cappelli spoke out about the proposal and asked the media to provide adequate information.

“Calm down, Folha! What we're going to do is protect our agency's information, corporate communication. Does anyone think that the German or French government communicates via WhatsApp? We don't want to ban anyone, we just want to protect our sovereignty,” he wrote on the social network X.

Later, the newspaper changed the headline of its publication: “Against leaks and data theft, government agency will no longer use WhatsApp”.
