The president of the Commission for the Evaluation of Infrastructure
Habitability, Francisco Garcés, proposed strengthening construction
regulations and professional training to reduce seismic
vulnerability in Venezuela, during the 82nd Annual Assembly of Fedechambers, held in Caracas.
“We cannot avoid the threat, but we can make ourselves
less vulnerable by building well and with a seismic culture,” Garcés said
during his presentation Agenda for Reconstruction, in which he highlighted the
importance of innovating in the sector and establishing a work agenda to ensure safer buildings.
The Minister of People's Power for Transport also
stressed the need to permanently train professionals in seismic resistant
architecture and noted that this preparation has made it possible to
deal with the contingency “in an effective, scientific, transparent and professional manner”.
Garcés also reviewed the country's seismic history and current construction regulations . In addition, he explained that the Habitability Commission is making progress in developing a protocol to evaluate more than 12,000 structures classified in red and determine the actions that will apply in each case.
