On March 6, 1927, the Colombian writer, screenwriter and journalist, Gabriel García Márquez, a distinguished American, was born in the town of Aracataca, who stood out for his brilliant works where realism and magic are intertwined, drawing the idiosyncrasy of the peoples of the Caribbean .
Winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1982, “Gabo” was characterized by the strength and realism it imprinted on his narrative, his masterpiece being One Hundred Years of Solitude, a work that, as he said on countless occasions, culminated in Mexico City, encouraged by the absence of a job that allowed him to lock himself in his house and finish this magnificent novel.
In addition to being an excellent writer and journalist, he was a political activist identified with revolutionary ideas, a fervent defender of the Nicaraguan and Cuban Revolution, even forging a strong friendship with Commander Fidel Castro, who later confessed to being its best editor and critic.
In addition, his activism led him to promote journalism distanced from large networks allied to big capitals, which is why he promotes the School of Ibero-American Journalism and, in part, one of the founders of Prensa Latina.
After a long life where he continued to publish important works and participate in actions in defense of peoples' struggles, Gabriel García Márquez died in Mexico City on April 17, 2014, leaving a legacy of literary wealth written in the warmth and flavor of the Caribbean.
