As part of the continuous strengthening of the national seismological monitoring system, the Venezuelan Foundation for Seismological Research (FUNVISIS) completed the installation of the new CN64-Caracas geodesic station, located in the institution's main headquarters.
This technical-scientific work was carried out by a Funvisis research team, in strategic cooperation with Adam Woolace, representative of the EarthScope Consortium, a scientific institution dedicated to promoting research, instrumentation and education in geophysical sciences on a global scale.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Science and Technology (MINCYT), to ensure the continuous collection of high-precision data, the station has a satellite navigation receiver and antenna, a real-time data transmission system supported by satellite technology, and a battery bank that ensures its uninterrupted operation in the event of possible interruptions in the electrical service.
The installed equipment has a measurement capacity capable of recording ground movement at millimeter scales, making it possible to study the gradual deformation of the Earth's crust. This encompasses the gradual tectonic movement that creates pressure on faults and the displacement that occurs during seismic events.
In addition, the implemented technology makes it possible to evaluate the response of the solid part of the Earth to variations in groundwater levels and the concentration of water vapor in the atmosphere, consolidating key data for the prevention of geological risks in the Homeland.
