After the earthquakes of June 24, the national government has employed a group of specialists from the Venezuelan Foundation for Seismological Research (FUNVISIS) to evaluate, record and measure the displacement of seismic deformation in affected areas of the state of La Guaira.
Professionals belonging to the Geophysics Department of Funvisis used Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) equipment to identify seismic deformity in the localized rupture zone.
GPR, also known as Georradar, is a non-invasive geophysical device that emits electromagnetic waves into the subsurface or structures. After an earthquake, it is used to evaluate hidden structural damage to buildings and detect deformations in the ground without the need to drill or demolish.
The implementation of this technology will allow specialists to interpret the underground deformation left by the earthquake, which provides fundamental information for the scientific study of the area.
