The former Sports Minister, Fritz Bélizaire, was appointed Prime Minister of Haiti by the Transitional Council installed in the Caribbean country, which elected former candidate Edgard Leblanc Fils as president of the nation, who is trying to emerge afloat in the midst of poverty and violence.
Bélizaire, little known, replaces Michel Patrick Boisvert, former Minister of Economy and Finance and current interim prime minister.
The majority that supported the new prime minister was made up of Fils, the new president of the Council, in addition to Smith Augustin, Louis Gérald Gilles and Emmanuel Vertilaire.
“This is a good choice for a prime minister,” Leblanc Fils said of Bélizaire. “What is important to us is this will, this determination to go beyond divisions, to overcome conflicts and to achieve consensus,” AP quoted.
The election was a surprise, and now president Fils announced that four voting council members had elected Bélizaire as prime minister.
The transitional council will act as the country's presidency until it can organize presidential elections a short time before disintegrating, which must occur in February 2026 or sooner.
