(EL NACIONAL, AUGUST 28, 1961)

  • On August 27, 1961, the leader of the Communist Youth Francisco “Chico” Velázquez, who was only 22 years old, was assassinated by the Municipal Police of Puerto la Cruz.
  • The police shot him down when he painted political slogans on a wall against the government at the hands of local municipal police officers. Carlos Canache Mata, was Secretary General of Government of Adeco.
  • In reality, the shooting reported in the headline of El Nacional did not happen.
  • “Chico” Velázquez was a politically persecuted man who was convicted by Digepol, and he was assassinated at gunpoint.
  • This was a revolutionary cadre, well known in all the popular neighborhoods of Puerto La Cruz, who stood out as a student leader during the resistance against the dictatorship of General Marcos Pérez Jiménez.

The context:

  • The previous June 21, the civic-military uprising known as “El Barcelonazo” had taken place. It was Carlos Andrés Pérez, Minister of Internal Relations, and Carlos Canache Mata, his repressive arm in the state of Anzoátegui, as Secretary General of Government.
  • The order issued from the Miraflores Palace was to shoot to kill communists. The summary investigations were led by the Tribe of David, responsible for manipulating material and testimonial evidence.
  • To this end, they had a judicial mafia made up of magistrates in all instances, prosecutors and forensic experts, who were responsible for adulterating files, manufacturing witnesses and disappearing any evidence that could hold police assassins responsible.
  • Under the action of these mafias, both the murder of “Chico” Velásquez and the shooting of 14 innocent civilians in the José María Freítes Barracks went unpunished.
