This Monday in France, the far-right leader, Marine Le Pen, was convicted of embezzlement of public funds and sentenced to four years in prison, with political disqualification for five years. The ruling was described as historic and shakes the European right.
The French Court of Cassation confirmed that Le Pen and his party, the National Group (AN), diverted at least 2.9 million euros earmarked for advisors to the European Parliament to finance partisan activities between 2004 and 2016.
The ruling against Le Pen, which includes millions of dollars in fines, prevents the nationalist from competing in the presidential elections of 2027.
Likewise, its extreme right-wing formation is also being tried as a legal entity, the AN has been ordered to pay two million euros: one million in firm form and another confiscated in case of recidivism.
