Former Chilean President Sebastián Piñera dies in a plane crash

The former president of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, died this Tuesday in a helicopter accident while traveling in the municipality of Lago Ranco, region of Los Ríos, diplomatic sources confirmed to local media.

According to Chilean media, the aircraft belonged to Piñera, who was traveling with three other occupants who survived the accident.

Reports indicate that the former president failed to remove his seat belt and drowned after the helicopter sank to a depth of 40 meters. The Chilean Navy arrived at the scene of the incident, which occurred around 15:00 (local time).

Officials from the Ministry of the Interior of Chile indicated that, after the helicopter fell into the lake, the three survivors managed to reach the shore.

Until now, the country's president, Gabriel Boric, has not spoken, while the deputies of the Chilean Congress offered a minute of silence upon hearing the news.
