Foreign ministers of Venezuela and Guyana talk by telephone to discuss territorial dispute

The Foreign Minister of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Yván
Gil, held a telephone conversation this Wednesday with his counterpart from
Guyana, Hugh Todd, to discuss the territorial dispute between the two countries over Guiana Essequiba, after the holding of the
consultative referendum last Sunday, December 3.
The meeting was requested by the Guyanese side, according to
an official statement released by Venezuela, in which they highlight “the
overwhelming participation of the popular consultation, generating an
unappealable mandate for Venezuelan institutions on the route to follow for the
solution of this territorial dispute, which is the Geneva Agreement signed between the parties in 1966”.

The Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela reports
that today, at the request of the Guyanese side, Foreign Minister Hugh Todd
held a telephone conversation with Foreign Minister Yvan Gil to discuss the
issue of the territorial dispute following the consultative referendum, convened by the National Assembly, which took place on December 3.
The Venezuelan side took the opportunity to update the government of
Guyana on the overwhelming participation of the popular consultation,
generating an unappealable mandate for Venezuelan institutions on the
route to follow for the resolution of this territorial dispute, which is the Geneva
Agreement signed between the parties in 1966.
The Venezuelan side expressed the need to stop
actions to aggravate the controversy in the territory of Guiana
Esequiba and they agreed to keep communication channels open.
