The Foreign Minister of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Yván Gil, held a telephone conversation this Wednesday with his counterpart from Guyana, Hugh Todd, to discuss the territorial dispute between the two countries over Guiana Essequiba, after the holding of the consultative referendum last Sunday, December 3.

The meeting was requested by the Guyanese side, according to an official statement released by Venezuela, in which they highlight “the overwhelming participation of the popular consultation, generating an unappealable mandate for Venezuelan institutions on the route to follow for the solution of this territorial dispute, which is the Geneva Agreement signed between the parties in 1966”.

The Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela reports that today, at the request of the Guyanese side, Foreign Minister Hugh Todd held a telephone conversation with Foreign Minister Yvan Gil to discuss the issue of the territorial dispute following the consultative referendum, convened by the National Assembly, which took place on December 3.

The Venezuelan side took the opportunity to update the government of Guyana on the overwhelming participation of the popular consultation, generating an unappealable mandate for Venezuelan institutions on the route to follow for the resolution of this territorial dispute, which is the Geneva Agreement signed between the parties in 1966.

The Venezuelan side expressed the need to stop actions to aggravate the controversy in the territory of Guiana Esequiba and they agreed to keep communication channels open.
