During his participation in the plenary session of the Future Summit, on behalf of the Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations (UN), the Foreign Minister of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Yván Gil, called on the countries of the world to move forward in the eradication of all types of colonialism.

In his speech, in the context of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, the head of Venezuelan diplomacy stated the importance of consolidating “the inalienable right to self-determination of peoples living under foreign and colonial occupation”, stating that “there will be no future without peace, and there will be no peace without development”.

In this regard, he condemned the genocide perpetrated by the Zionist regime of Israel against the people of Palestine in the Gaza Strip. “It is time to move towards the elimination of colonialism in all its forms and manifestations. It is our moral and ethical duty to conclude the decolonization processes that are still pending,” he said.

He reiterated the “urgent call for a ceasefire in Gaza; our call for justice and an end to the illegal Israeli occupation; as well as our call for the Security Council to fully assume its responsibilities, even reconsidering favorably the application of Palestine to become a full Member State of the UN”.

In this regard, Gil emphasized that “keeping silent is not an option, as this has only ended up emboldening the Occupying Power, which continues to commit serious violations of international law with total impunity.”

He pointed to the right to development of peoples as the engine and the object of the Group of Friends in Defense of the UN Charter, so it is necessary for countries, in particular those of the Global South, to “resume the path towards the timely achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), for which it is urgent, on the one hand, to advance in the reform of the international financial architecture, designed today to perpetuate a model of domination and dependence, and, on the other hand, to put an end to the enactment and application of unilateral coercive measures”.
