The Minister of Popular Power for Foreign Affairs, Yván Gil, received this Friday the Style Copies of the designated ambassador of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Richard Van West Charles, as part of the protocol of diplomatic accreditation in the country.

Through his account on the social network X, the Foreign Minister indicated that he will work in collaboration with the new ambassador “and his team to improve effective communication” between Caracas and Georgetown, in the midst of the territorial controversy over Guiana Essequiba.

On January 25, Gil met in Brazil with his Guyanese counterpart, Hugh Todd, for the installation of the first binational Joint Commission, agreed in the Argyle Declaration on December 14, to address the controversy.

From the Itamaraty Palace, headquarters of the Brazilian Foreign Ministry, the diplomats issued a Joint Declaration, accompanied by representatives of the governments of Brazil, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Dominica.

This was the first high-level meeting between the delegations of both countries since the dialogue between Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his Guyanese counterpart, Irfaan Ali, last December in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

Richard Van West-Charles is a doctor of medicine, with a career of more than forty years in public health and water resource management. His experience encompasses executive, academic and consulting roles at the national and international levels. Prior to his appointment in Caracas, he served as President of the West Africa-South America Alliance Inc.
