The Venezuelan Foreign Minister, Iván Gil, leaving the meeting of the Joint Commission of Venezuela and Guyana, stated the need and commitment to continue advancing the diplomatic agenda to resolve the territorial dispute between both nations.

“We installed the first Joint Commission of Foreign Ministers and Technicians between the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, with the purpose of addressing the points and guidelines established in the Argyle declaration, agreed in December in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines where we reiterate Venezuela's historic position, President Maduro's message of peace, as well as our firm resolve to respect the Geneva Agreement and of international law,” Gil emphasized after the meeting of foreign ministers that took place in Brazil.

He added that emphasis was placed on the importance of avoiding the intervention of foreign powers in the controversy and the need to examine Guyana's position and actions with respect to the undelimited maritime area to ensure respect for the conditions agreed upon for decades between our countries.

It is essential to highlight that direct talks between Guyana and Venezuela represent the only way to find a peaceful and harmonious solution for Guiana Essequiba,” Gil reiterated.

The diplomat described the meeting as a first step in greater work by the teams, we hope to continue the discussion and confirmed the interest of the Guyanese side in maintaining and deepening historic cooperation agreements between the two nations on issues such as energy and food.

Gil from the Itamaraty Palace, Brazil, thanked the regional blocs of countries, as well as some dignitaries from Latin America and the Caribbean for their contribution to achieving the meeting with his counterpart from Guyana, Hugh Todd, with the purpose of addressing the issue of the territorial controversy of Guiana Essequiba.

“Venezuela continues to bet on direct dialogue to resolve the Essequibo territorial dispute and preserve peace in our region. Once again, we thank CELAC and the support of Brazil and CARICOM for supporting this first meeting of the Joint Commission of Foreign Ministers and Technicians of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, in line with the Argyle Declaration,” he stressed.
