The Chancellor of the Republic, Iván Gil, reiterated the complaint against the Washington Arbitration Award of 1897, in which the United States and the United Kingdom signed their agreement to strip Venezuela of Guiana Essequiba.

“On February 2, 1897, the imperial powers of the United States and the United Kingdom signed the Washington Arbitration Treaty, which resulted in the disastrous Paris Arbitration Award of 1899. This award stripped Venezuela of Guiana Essequiba, favoring the United Kingdom as a colonial power over Guyana. In addition, this event laid the foundations for subsequent U.S. intervention in Latin American affairs,” the Venezuelan diplomat reported through his account on the social network Telegram.
