Some three thousand families were affected in nine of Paraguay's seventeen departments by floods following the overflow of the Paraná River, following the intense rains of the last week associated with the El Niño weather phenomenon, the Secretariat of National Emergency (SEN) reported.

In the departments of Ñeembucú, Misiones and Itapúa (south), many homes were underwater due to the overflow of the Paraná, which serves as a natural border with Argentina, the SEN said, confirming that it has brought food, plastic tents and construction materials to the locals.

The emergency also affected the inhabitants of the departments of Central, which is the most populated region in the nation, such as: Guairá, Caaguazú, Concepción, San Pedro and Canindeyú.

The municipality of Ayolas, in Misiones, is jointly managed between Paraguay and Argentina; it became one of the hardest hit points due to its proximity to the Yacyretá dam, a town where around 1,40 families have received assistance.

The solidarity also extended to the animals, as the NGO SOS Animal Ayolas managed to rescue some 247 pets trapped in flooded areas over the past few days.

For its part, the department of Alto Paraná, located on the border with Brazil, registered at least 1,300 families relocated, after reporting a “slight drop” in the level of the Paraná River, which dropped to 117.57 meters above sea level, after it had touched 121.19 meters last Thursday.
