This Saturday, March 16, the Government of Niger announced that they broke “with immediate effect”, the military cooperation agreement with the United States, because it was “unfair” and imposed unilaterally by the North American country with a simple “note verbale” on July 6, 2012.

According to information from Telesur, the decision was announced by the government spokesman, Amadou Abdramane, in a statement read on national television.

“The Government of Niger, taking into account the aspirations and interests of its people, decided (...) to denounce with immediate effect the agreement relating to the status of U.S. military personnel and civilian employees of the U.S. Department of Defense in the territory of Niger,” he said.

In this regard, he assured that the US military presence in the African country is “illegal and violates all constitutional or democratic rules.”

It is important to remember that the decision came after the departure of the American delegation led by the Undersecretary of State for African Affairs, Molly Phee.

During the visit, Phee was unable to meet the head of the Niger government, Abduraman Tiani, according to local media.

The United States has just over 1,000 soldiers in Niger engaged in the anti-jihadist fight and has an important drone base in Agadez (central Niger).
