This Wednesday, the French judiciary handed down a final ruling against former President Nicolas Sarkozy for corruption and influence peddling, in the context of a case involving wiretapping.
Sarkozy had been sentenced to three years in prison in 2021, a sentence that his defense appealed several times, but his attempts were dismissed.
The French Court of Cassation reported that, in the sentence, they will recognize the year that the former president has already served under house arrest with an electronic bracelet.
In 2014, Sarkozy, two lawyers and a judge tried to obtain information from a magistrate about the course of an investigation that pointed to the illicit financing of his presidential campaign a decade earlier.
Everything was discovered when those involved were instructed to tap the phones, at which time it was verified that they were using false pseudonyms to communicate.
The name of the former president also appears in the judicial investigation into the award of the World Cup to Qatar and the acquisition of Paris Saint-Germain.
