The El Niño climate phenomenon reached the category of “extremely strong” and will affect the South American region at least until February 2027, with estimates from the United Nations (UN) forecasting its peak at the end of this year as one of the most intense events recorded since 1950, Telesur explained.

Researchers from the Navy's Oceanographic and Antarctic Institute (INOCAR) warned of serious impacts on fishing, intense waves and severe flooding in coastal areas, while in Ecuador, torrential rains have already left more than 13,300 people affected, thousands of homes damaged and massive agricultural losses.

“The authorities expect that the critical phase will continue during the winter rainy period, prolonging the risks of landslides, overflows and economic instability in vulnerable communities,” said spokespersons for the official prevention agency regarding the persistence of the meteorological event.

Constant monitoring of watersheds and vulnerable populations will continue over the coming months in view of the possibility of intensified landslides and overflows in the region.
