The Minister of Popular Power for Culture, Ernesto Villegas Poljak, reported that Egypt offered to send several of its experts to evaluate the archaeological collection held by the Museum of Fine Arts (MBA), in Caracas, as part of agreements between the two nations to strengthen cultural ties.

“They will send experts to evaluate them, because among these 48 pieces there are portions of larger ones that Egypt preserves incomplete and some with exceptional historical value, because they contain valuable information, which does not exist in their country of origin,” Villegas said on the social network X, where he highlighted the meeting he held with the Egyptian Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Ahmed Issa.

In this regard, he indicated that Venezuela is ready for dialogue in the event that Egypt confirms interest in the possible repatriation of some of the pieces, “taking as an example the recovery of the Kueka Stone, achieved by Venezuela after 20 years of being exhibited in a park in Germany and other good practices in the fight against the illicit trafficking of cultural property.”

He highlighted that during the meeting, the possibility of exchanging experiences in the management of heritage sites and in the restoration of museums and archaeological pieces was also considered. For this reason, he noted that the possibility of incorporating Venezuelan archaeologists into international missions working on Egyptian sites was considered.

On the other hand, he indicated that “the senior Egyptian official presented me with a miniature replica of a ship used to transport stones and materials in the construction of the pyramids of Giza. For my part, I gave him a replica of the kinetic work of the master Juvenal Ravelo”.

In addition, he emphasized that he extended the greeting of the President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, to his Egyptian counterpart, Abdelfatah El-Sisi, “and the will to maximize bilateral cooperation, especially in the field of art, culture and tourism.”
