On October 13, 1838, Eduardo Abaroa Hidalgo, a Bolivian hero of the Pacific War , was born in San Pedro de Atacama.

The dispute over the very rich desert region in Atacama, a place called potassium nitrate, was the cause of a conflict between Bolivia, Chile and Peru.

A treaty signed in 1874 granted the place to Bolivia, but in 1878 Chilean nitrate companies opposed paying 25 years of taxes.

Because of the situation, Chile broke off relations with Bolivia and arbitrarily seized the coastal port of Antofagasta, which led to the War of the Pacific.

In the same way, the Chileans attacked in the town of Calama, in the interior of the Atacama desert, Eduardo Abaroa Hidalgo enlisted to defend this point.

On March 23, 1879, Abaroa was wounded in the throat and managed to stop the advance of Chilean soldiers until he ran out of ammunition. The Bolivian refused to surrender to the invaders and exclaimed: “Let your grandmother give up, damn it!” Two enemy gunshots ended his life.

Every March 23, Bolivia celebrates the Day of the Sea, (remembering the loss of the Litoral Department). According to Commander Fidel Castro, in a letter sent to Evo Morales in 2013, he said: Abaroa Hidalgo “fell fighting against invading forces that were incomparably superior in number and training. After the fight in which he lost his life, Chilean chiefs and soldiers honored him.”
