Despite attempts to
present the former candidate of the violent right, Edmundo González Urrutia, as a good-natured,
pacifist, honest and democratic figure, once again the creators of negative fantasies deceived their followers.
If we ask ourselves: “Who is González Urrutia?” Some information points to the “bloodthirsty past” of the Venezuelan
opponent and his connection with the Central Intelligence Agency
(CIA).
Documents, revealed by Central American activists, indicate that during his tenure as an official of the Venezuelan embassy in El Salvador during the 1980s, he was recruited by the CIA to “build paramilitary groups and death squads; from that Embassy they planned murders against religious activists and social leaders”. At the time, journalist Leopoldo Castillo was the Venezuelan ambassador to that country.
In these writings, it is detailed that González Urrutia “became a man of the complete trust of the United States, participating with funding and logistics in the creation of the Atlacatl Battalion of the Salvadoran armed forces and of all the bloodthirsty, ruthless paramilitary groups, in against the Salvadoran population”. stated that “all those years of Salvadoran civil war were years of terror directed from the office of the Venezuelan embassy in El Salvador by González Urrutia”.
Until now, former candidate González Urrutia has failed to
deny his participation in the massacre that occurred in the Mozote community ; during a counterinsurgency operation carried out by the Atlactl Battalion on December 9, 10, 11 and 12, 1981, there were at least 900 deaths among children, the elderly, housewives and peasants.
The Emerging
Candidate
Despite the fact that Mr. González Urrutia was not in the so-called “primary election process” organized by María Corina Machado, and who, knowing her disqualification from participating in elected positions, the opposition leader decided to register González
Urrutia as a
candidate for president for the Democratic
Unitary Platform (PUD), rescinding the participation of the other
candidates who accompanied her in the opposition elections.
Prior to the presidential elections,
as is already the norm in every electoral process, the National Electoral Council (CNE) presented the Recognition Agreement of Results
of the Presidential Election , through which the electoral
candidates committed themselves to recognizing the results and the
Electoral Power, in addition to contributing to the peace and tranquility of the country. Of
course, the only candidate who didn't sign it was the PUD candidate.
Later, after the electoral process was held and the CNE had proclaimed the winner of the Revolution, Nicolás Maduro Moros,
the candidate of the Revolution; on the same day, July 28, González Urrutia together with María Corina Machado, declared that there was fraud, a statement that was made without presenting evidence or submitting to the
electoral power the request that the law makes in the face of any disagreement with the results.
A week after
the elections, re-elected President Nicolás
Maduro proposed to the Electoral Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) record all the
records, in order to alleviate any doubts they may have regarding their
victory and to maintain national peace. In this regard, Maduro attended the Supreme Court and presented 100% of the original minutes and invited the other former candidates to comply with
the subpoena of the judiciary.
The chief rector of the CNE, Elvis Amoroso, also went to the Supreme Court and
delivered the documents requested by that court for the examination of the electoral records.
The Supreme Court reported that all former applicants were duly cited
and recalled their obligation by law to attend the call. González
Urrutia did not attend, whose organization did not
recognize the electoral results, tried to supplant the Electoral Power and
promoted violent acts on July 29 and 30, which left two security officers killed and more than 140 of them injured.
At the call of the Supreme Court, the opposition parties that
supported the PUD candidate did not
record evidence or minutes, they only went to the Electoral Chamber of the Supreme Court: Manuel Rosales, of the Un party
Nuevo
Tiempo , and representatives of other
organizations that are part of the PUD, such as José Luis Cartaya of the Bureau of the Democratic Unity and José Simón Calzadilla, of the Movement
for Venezuela, who informed the judicial authorities that
they, as representatives of the parties, did not have access to the minutes
electoral elections and declared that they were in the possession of the organization SÚMATE, on instructions from the
leader María Corina Machado.
Also present were
representatives of the First Venezuela party, Luis Parra; of the political organization Unidad Visión Venezuela (UVV), Omar Ávila; the former candidate for the Justice First Movement party , José Brito and Miguel Salazar, representative of Copei ; none of them submitted
evidence or records to the Supreme Court.
The Flight of Edmundo González
From July 29, one day after the
elections, Edmundo González Urrutia was guarded at the Dutch embassy in Venezuela until 05/0. He was hiding there
for more than a month, as explained by the Dutch Foreign Minister, Caspar Veldkamp: “In early September, Edmundo González asked to leave and continue his fight from Spain.”
From there, he went to the Hispanic
embassy, which
accepted his asylum request and, thanks to the management of the Bolivarian Government,
he left Venezuela on September 08.
To approve the request, the executive vice president, Delcy Rodríguez, assured that the Bolivarian Government granted due safeguards for the sake of
tranquility and political peace in the country.
Later, while already in Spain, he ignored the International Law on Political Asylum and began his tour around the
world, assuring that he was sworn in before the National Assembly of Venezuela on January 10 of this year, and together with María
Corina Machado called for
a rally for January 9th; seeing the lack of participation of her followers, she put together a media show
of a false kidnapping, shootings and
injuries; which hours later was unveiled by the Bolivarian Government.
Travels
around the world
In an interview conducted
on April 26, 2024 by journalist Luis
Olavarrieta, called “This was not in my plans”, the
then PUD candidate, Edmundo González, commented that he defines himself “as a democrat, a defender of rights”
human and defender of liberties”, despite the fact that during his time at
the embassy in El Salvador in the 80s he left
bloody balances, which he justified with the fact that he “only carried out
institutional activities for the Venezuelan State”.
González Urrutia said that this had been “an atypical campaign, because there are only 90 days left until the elections, we don't have the resources to carry out an electoral campaign, to deploy across the country.” In that interview, he was asked: “Who is funding your campaign? To which he replied: “My pocket, which is scarce because I am a retiree from the Public Administration and I am not enough to eat a hamburger.” Along the same lines, he categorically denied that American organizations financed his campaign, which were only ill-considered comments to discredit him, since Venezuela must once again be a reliable supplier for the United States .
Later, Olavarrieta questioned him about whether his age could be limiting when traveling the country, to which: “I am not thinking of touring the country, I am
leaving that task to the other leaders who accompany me, such as María Corina Machado for example, I have been making
the effort to get to know me, María
Corina tours the country with a poster
of mine.”
However, the former candidate has
not stopped traveling around the world, handing over some supposed electoral records that, despite
being illegal, he offers to those who receive them. This is how we see his tour of Latin America to
countries such as Argentina , Uruguay, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Paraguay, Ecuador, Chile, Peru, Panama and Europeans such as Germany,
Portugal, the Netherlands, Italy, France, Belgium and Spain while still waiting for the American
president to receive it in the Oval Office.
It would seem then that González Urrutia suffers from what is defined as aporophobia, since he had
said that he was not willing to travel around the country, to meet the people from whom he was
asking for his vote; however, he has been touring the world, where they receive
him with luxury and attention with the excuse of showing acts that he has not yet submitted to the Supreme Court.
Once again he disappointed
his followers with the promise of the swearing in, and now they have all their
hopes in the Trump administration,
who would be responsible for overthrowing Nicolás
Maduro, something that until now has not been in the plans of the American president.
According to this, we can then
say that the opposition is still immersed in a spiral of lies,
failures and false promises, and the most shameful thing is that there are still many
people who believe in them and are constantly mocked by these leaders.
