This Tuesday, the general secretary of the National Assembly of Ecuador, Alejandro Muñoz, reported that President Daniel Noboa would be committing a serious electoral offense, by not requesting unpaid leave to campaign in the framework of the elections of April 13.
“We are talking about a public official who is campaigning and is doing political proselytizing, without the authorization established in the Constitution, and that could obviously lead to, potentially, a very serious electoral violation,” the official said, according to information published by Sputnik.
Likewise, Muñoz indicated that the electoral control bodies must determine what is appropriate in this case. And according to the Code of Democracy, which governs electoral processes, the public official who aspires to be re-elected in the same position must request a leave without pay.
Noboa and his government team argue that this requirement does not apply in their case, because the president came to the Presidency as a result of early elections, so it does not correspond to a re-election.
