During her speech at the World Forum of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), President Delcy Rodríguez made a firm call to the international community to depoliticize access to food and privilege diplomacy over differences between States.

“Food should never become instruments of pressure or political confrontation. Where there are differences between States, dialogue and diplomacy must prevail; and where there is hunger, our common responsibility must be to find solutions,” said the National President.

From the international forum of FAO, Rodríguez urged an end to sanctions and measures imposed outside international law, pointing out that these generate serious implications for the fundamental right to food of peoples.

The Head of State said that Venezuela knows both the advances and the advances and the setbacks in the fight against hunger. “Our country achieved significant progress during the first decades of this century, and in 2013 FAO recognized Venezuela among the countries that had achieved international hunger reduction goals, from 2.8 million undernourished people equivalent to 14.1% of the population in 1990, to less than 5%,” he said.

Rodríguez explained that, after this period of progress, the country went through a critical phase marked by internal political confrontation and a strong economic contraction, intensified starting in 2017 by the application of unilateral coercive measures.

“These measures, which reached 16% in the agri-food sector, affected access to finance to agricultural inputs, technologies, spare parts, equipment and different components necessary to keep our production chains working. Venezuela then experienced a severe food supply crisis that affected the entire society,” he recalled.

However, the President assured that the country has begun to progressively reverse this scenario thanks to political understanding, as well as diplomatic dialogue with the United States of America, combined with the political stability necessary to produce and grow.
