The latest report presented by the NGO Emblema de Prensa Campaign (PEC), in Geneva, revealed that approximately 140 journalists were killed worldwide in 2023.

According to the document, 81 of the fatalities occurred in the Gaza Strip, since last October, during the attacks of the Zionist regime of Israel against the Palestinian people.

The data show that 2023 became the deadliest year in a decade for media workers, highlighting an increase of 24 deaths compared to 2022, where 116 journalists were killed.

Of the total number of violent deaths, 90 were counted in the Middle East, 20 in Latin America, 12 in Asia, 11 in Africa, four in Europe and three in North America, according to the report cited by TELESUR.

Regarding the situation in the Gaza Strip and the alarming numbers, the president of the PEC, Blaise Lempen, urged the United Nations (UN) to investigate the circumstances in which the deaths of the communicators in Gaza occurred.
