October 12, 1492, when the Spanish, under the command of Christopher Columbus, arrived in these lands, beginning centuries of exploitation, death and discrimination against the original inhabitants who lived in this vast continent.
This act, which led to the most horrendous genocide ever committed against Pueblo in the world, during decades of the so-called Fourth Republic, was boasted, a historical incongruity that ended with the arrival of Commander Hugo Chávez and the Bolivarian Revolution, which established this date as the Day of Indigenous Resistance, to honor the courage and dignity of the native inhabitants of this territory, who gallantly confronted the Spanish colonizers
The first name of the October 12 anniversary Day of the Race was declared in 1921, when Venezuela was governed by Juan Vicente Gómez. Eight decades later, this “discriminatory, racist and pejorative” was abolished to begin a new phase where homage is paid to our ancestors.
Thus, at the height of the Bolivarian Revolution, specifically on October 12, 2002, the National Assembly of Venezuela established decree 2028 to commemorate the Day of Indigenous Resistance.
