DAVID MARTÍNEZ ESCOBAR, A STUDENT AT UNIV. DE LOS ANDES (LA EXTRA, May 25 + El Carabobeño, May 23, 1964)

  • On May 24, the Investigating and Juvenile Judge of the Judicial District of the State of Táchira issued an arrest ballot against the Copeyan leader José Ramón Contreras, for being the material perpetrator of the shooting that blinded the life of 18-year-old student David Martínez Escobar.
  • The Catholic Journal, a newspaper of the ultra-conservative extreme right in San Cristóbal, attributed the crime to left-wing student forces, when it published that the perpetrators of the murder were “extremists” who shot and stoned the regional house of the Copei party.
  • El Carabobeño, in an article published by Fabián Palma, entitled “Another Dead Student”, on May 21, began to uncover the media pot of the Catholic Diario de San Cristóbal, clarifying that the real material author of the murder that used the firearm against the university student David Martínez was not a “communist or myrista” but a Copei militant, assimilated to the armed gangs of AD.
  • On the other hand, other AD militants were arrested because during these riots they caused gunshot wounds to students Humberto Antonio Orellana and Manuel Concepción.
  • The death of ULA engineering student, David Martínez, occurred at 11:00am on May 08, in the vicinity of the Simón Bolívar High School, in front of the Copei party house.
  • For several days, the Catholic Diary, in addition to others with national and regional circulation, spread the story about the participation of left-wing young people in the murder, which was totally denied.
  • The smokescreen was short-lived, as the court in the case determined, through appropriate investigations, the truth of the facts. However, the newspapers that used their battery of lies to stigmatize the revolutionary left, and to exonerate the crimes of AD and Copei, did not retract this or any other issue.
  • El Universal, Última Noticias, La Esfera and El Nacional, in addition to radio and TV, never ceased in their headlines to endorse the deaths and crimes of the armed gangs of AD and Copei to the revolutionary militancy of the PCV and MIR, or of making them look like acts of blood perpetrated by common crime.
