On February 14, 1801, Daniel Florencio O'Leary, a prominent military and politician who joined Venezuela's historic independence quest, was born in Ireland.

O'Leary was promoted to captain in 1819, he participated in the campaigns of New Granada and Apure, and after the Battle of Boyacá he was in charge of the division of the General Staff.

After the death of José Antonio Anzoátegui, he entered the service of Simon Bolivar as the Edecán of the Liberator. At his side, he achieved several campaigns such as: the liberation of Venezuela, which was sealed with the second Battle of Carabobo in 1821; the liberation of Quito (Ecuador), where he fought alongside General Antonio José de Sucre in the decisive Battle of Pichincha in 1822 (in battle, Sucre promoted him to Lieutenant Colonel); and the Peruvian campaign, where he was in the Battle of Junín, among others.

In 1825 Bolívar made him colonel and ratified him as his aedican. His loyalty to the Liberator was indestructible.

“When the Liberator died and his great work was destroyed, I retired to Jamaica to organize his papers and write my memoirs,” he said.
