The passage of Cyclone Fengal through Sri Lanka and southern India left 20 people dead, the Telesur website reported.
Fengal entered the country last Saturday, November 30, with heavy rains that had not occurred in the town of Puducherry in more than 30 years, triggering floods and landslides that have seriously affected the region's infrastructure.
The minister of disaster management in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, KKSSR Ramachandran, announced that 17 people died in Sri Lanka; in addition, he reported that the effects of the cyclone have been felt in the city since Friday.
On the other hand, India's disaster management agency stated that around 470,000 people received shelter in the midst of the crisis.
According to information from the meteorological services, this Monday some regions in the south of the country were on alert with the risk of flash floods.
India is a country that frequently faces cyclone attacks that cause numerous damages to its infrastructure every year. Events of this type not only generate human losses, but they also cause the collapse of transportation systems, public services and housing.
The country's vulnerability to these natural disasters highlights the need to develop more effective strategies for emergency management and community resilience.
