Imports registered a 15% growth during 2026 compared to last year, according to the balance provided by Rusvel Gutiérrez, president of the Chamber of Customs, Industrialists and Traders of La Guaira, who highlighted a greater movement of goods through the entity's port.
The union representative pointed out that this behavior is also reflected in the rest of the country's customs offices and responds, among other factors, to the planning of international purchases made by merchants months in advance to guarantee supplies during the Christmas season and at the end of the year, the Latest News portal reported.
He explained that merchandise previously purchased by importers is currently arriving in the national territory, a dynamic that increases port activity and nationalization processes during the last months of the year.
Gutiérrez indicated that, after the temporary interruption of operations at the port of La Guaira and Maiquetía Airport due to the double earthquake of last June 24, part of the imports had to be redirected to Puerto Cabello and the Valencia air customs office.
However, with the reactivation of operations at the La Guaira terminals, the movement of goods resumed its usual course and currently there is greater dynamism in the procedures for their nationalization and delivery to the owners.
He also stressed that the behavior of imports constitutes an indicator of national economic activity and considered it important that this growth is also reflected in exports, as part of the country's commercial development.
