This Tuesday, the director general of Bilateral Affairs of the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Carlos Miguel Pereira, officially requested the incorporation of his country into the BRICS as a partner.

Through a post on the social network X, Pereira indicated that the request was made through a letter addressed to the president of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, whose country holds the presidency of the Group this year. The BRICS association, according to the official, “is consolidated as a key actor in global geopolitics and hope for the countries of the South.”

Russia assumed the presidency of the BRICS since January 1, 2024. This year, five countries joined the organization: Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Ethiopia. The number of participants together with Russia, Brazil, India, China and South Africa reached ten.

Putin has assured that the enlargement demonstrates the growing authority of the bloc, as well as its key role in international affairs. In addition, the president asserted in September that currently 34 countries have expressed their desire to join the BRICS in one way or another.
